Wombwell Community Lunch Club
The Lunch Club has been going for over a year now and is held every Thursday at St Michaels and All Angels Church Hall on Park St, Wombwell. An affordable – £4.00 two course home cooked meal with tea and coffee is not the only thing that is on the menu. When you enter the room, you are immediately greeted by a welcoming smile from our team of volunteers.
Sandra, a relatively new member, says “I was slightly apprehensive about coming to the lunch club, but I was amazed at the lovely welcoming atmosphere that greeted me when I walked into the room. It’s been great meeting new friends and chatting over lunch, and the volunteers look after you.”
Ken told us “I live alone, and I like to come here to socialise with friends, and the food is lovely.”
It isn’t only the lunch that the members come for it is meeting others and breaking that circle of social isolation which seems to increase during the winter.
The volunteers always greet the members with a steaming mug of soup during the winter months. Conversations around this time are usually about the bad weather and the need to stay safe and warm; and the importance of having a hot meal every day.
The cost of keeping your home warm during the winter can sometimes become a financial burden and, with this, in mind, Barnsley Council’s Housing and Energy Officer was invited to the group to advise on best energy deals. No one wants to pay more to keep themselves warm than they need to.
The lunch club’s door is always open to new members and new volunteers of all ages to find out more please ring 07754 062532.
