North East kicks the Habit

9th October 2018by Barnsley Council

On Monday 16 July 2018 the North East Area Team launched their new Smoke-Free initiative to help residents to kick the smoking habit.

One of the priorities identified by the North East Area Council is resident’s health and wellbeing, and as there is still a high percentage of smokers in the North East, it was agreed that further support is needed for residents. As part of this work, they have commissioned Sarah Sverdloff, a dedicated Stop Smoking Specialist, to provide targeted help through stop smoking clinics and advice sessions in the community.

This is a free local service for people who live and work in Brierley, Carlton, Cudworth, Great Houghton, Grimethorpe, Lundwood, Monk Bretton, Shafton, Smithies, and Royston.

Sarah Sverdloff, the Stop Smoking Advisor, said: “I’m really enjoying working in the North East area and helping residents to kick the habit for good. By attending one of my weekly sessions, people can access a range of advice and stop smoking medications. This means they are four times more likely to quit than by willpower alone.”

Councillor Joe Hayward, the North East Area Council Chair said “The North East Area Council is sponsoring the new Stop Smoking project. A range of Stop Smoking medications and support and advice will be available to people who live, and work, in this area who would like to stop smoking. We are delighted to be able to help people to be able to access this service in their local communities.

Emily from the Shafton area said “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Sarah she has really supported me to maintain my motivation. As a result of accessing the service, I have stopped smoking, I feel loads better and I am financially better off. I would highly recommend the service as Sarah is really approachable and friendly, she is there for you whenever you need her every step of the way.”

Sessions will take place every week at the following locations:

Royston Group Practice, 9am – 12 noon

Silverdale Community Centre. 2pm – 4pm

Grimethorpe Family Centre, 9am to 12 noon

Royston Library, 1pm to 5pm
