Last summers’ partnership working between the Barnsley’s Foster Care Team and the North East Area Council lead to a flurry of new people registering their interest in becoming Barnsley carers for Barnsley children.
The pilot project aimed to bring in new recruitment, by utilising the Area Council’s local knowledge and community projects; while flooding the area with Barnsley Fostering messages.
The partnership allowed the Fostering Team to target their recruitment drives specifically in the North East area. The Fostering Team were welcomed at all the community fayres and galas’ as well as receiving support via social media. Local Councillors, Local Officers and Local Community Members simply being vocal about their support for Fostering brought overwhelming results and records for monthly enquiries were quickly broken.
Cllr Margaret Bruff, Cabinet Spokesperson for People (Safeguarding), said: “We achieved fantastic exposure. Attending local community events, which draw in residents from other parts of the borough, has been an excellent way to get our message across to Barnsley residents. Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for People and North East Area Council Member, Said: “It’s been fantastic to work with the Fostering Team. We’re proud of what our area has to offer, and it’s great to see our residents respond to the campaign so positively. Foster carers are amazing people, and it’s great that the work we’ve done together will have such a positive effect on our young people who need support.”
The success of the North East Area Council support from last year’s project has encouraged the Fostering Service to go forward and approach all Area Councils for their support this year. The North East Area Council has been the template, showcasing what is possible.
Barnsley is still in need of more foster carers for the young people of Barnsley. You don’t have to be a superhero to be a foster carer. By providing a young person with safety, stability and support, you can impact on their life positively to allow them to flourish as independent adults.
